Kamal Haasan, during a recent media interaction at the Thug Life Hindi trailer launch in Mumbai, shared heartfelt reflections on his long-standing friendship with director Mani Ratnam. Looking back at their first meeting, Haasan highlighted how their shared passion for cinema was the foundation of their enduring partnership. “We are fans, we are film buffs,” Haasan said, underscoring that their love for films is what first brought them together and continues to keep their creative bond alive.
Haasan recalled that his first impression of Mani Ratnam was not as a filmmaker, but as a neighbor and a friend. “I knew him as a friend living in the same area. I didn’t even know that he belonged to a film family,” Haasan explained. “He was just a person, and I liked the way he spoke. We became friends, and we would talk about cinema all the time. That’s where it started.” This shared interest in movies turned into a deep and lasting connection that later shaped their incredible creative collaboration.
Their mutual admiration for cinema was evident even during the making of Nayakan (1987). Haasan recalled a moment when they visited a shooting set, saying, “We went to see the shooting of Ramesh Sippy Saab in Film City. We are ultimately, the qualification that brought us here, like you all, we are fans, we are film buffs.” This candid admission of being admirers of the craft, just like the rest of the audience, was a reminder of how their journey started and the shared excitement they felt for filmmaking.
Now, as Thug Life prepares for its release, Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s partnership is a testament to how the love for cinema transcends all boundaries. With decades of friendship, artistic respect, and a shared vision, fans are eagerly waiting for the magic this duo will create once again.
